Throwaway email for Reddit: keep the throwaway actually separate

A throwaway email for Reddit makes sense when the account exists to ask one awkward question or post something you don't want tied to your main username. Reddit allows multiple accounts, and its email sign-up only needs a 6-digit code, so a temp inbox does the job. Know the trade-off first: without a working email, a forgotten password means a lost account.

Is it OK to have a throwaway account on Reddit?

Yes. Reddit's help center says you're welcome to create multiple accounts. The one warning on that page: never vote on the same posts or comments from more than one account, because that counts as vote manipulation.

Throwaways are an old Reddit habit. People make one for relationship advice, a medical question, a rant about their boss, a confession they'd rather not see next to their gaming posts. None of that is a problem. The trouble starts only when a second account is used to boost the first or to get around a ban, which we'll come to.

Why not use your main email for a throwaway?

Because the email is the thread that ties a throwaway back to you. Reddit even lets you verify several accounts with the same address, which is convenient and is exactly the link a throwaway is meant to avoid.

A few concrete ways it leaks:

  • Reddit's password reset shows every username attached to an email address. Anyone who can open your inbox, on a shared laptop or after getting into your account, can request a reset and see the full list.
  • Reply alerts, chat notifications and digests for the throwaway arrive in your main inbox, right next to everything else with your name on it.
  • If account data ever leaked, the two accounts would share an identifier.

A separate address removes that link. It doesn't hide you from Reddit the company, but it keeps the throwaway out of your inbox and off that reset list.

Does Reddit require an email address?

Not always. Reddit offers three routes: email, a phone number (in some countries) and a Google or Apple account. The email route asks you to enter a 6-digit code before you pick a username.

Two details matter for throwaways. Google and Apple sign-in tie the Reddit account to your real Google or Apple identity, and Reddit links each Google or Apple account to only one Reddit account at a time. Skip those. And an account with no email has no password reset at all. Reddit says that if you forget the password and never added an email, it has no way to confirm the account is yours.

Reddit also talks about "trusted domains". Verifying with a large provider such as Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo is one signal that you're likely to use the site in good faith. It adds that other domains are fine and that it has other ways to judge. A temp address gives up that one signal; it doesn't sink the account by itself.

Your options for a throwaway, side by side

The right address depends on whether the throwaway is for one post or for a year.

Option Linked to your main identity? Password reset later? Best for
Temp mail No Only while the inbox exists One question, one-off posts
Email alias Not visibly, it forwards to you Yes A throwaway you may keep
Same email as your main Yes, it's on the reset list Yes Convenience, not privacy
Google or Apple sign-in Yes, to that account Through that account Not throwaways
Phone number, where offered Yes, to your number Through your phone Not throwaways

How to set up a Reddit throwaway with temp mail

  1. Open a throwaway email inbox. The address is ready when the page loads.
  2. On Reddit, choose to sign up with an email address and paste it in.
  3. Copy the 6-digit code from the inbox with one click and enter it.
  4. Pick a username that shares nothing with your other handles. Reddit won't let you change it later.
  5. Save the password in a password manager, because the inbox won't be there to reset it.
  6. Log out afterwards if you're on a shared device.

On the YelMail free plan, the inbox expires after two hours without use and its mail is deleted. A one-question account needs nothing more, as long as step 5 is done.

What gives a throwaway away? Usually not the email

Most throwaways get linked to their owners by what they post. The email is the easy part.

  • A reused username, or one close to your gamer tag
  • Details that add up: your city, your job, your age and the story you told on your main account last month
  • Posting from both accounts in the same thread, or replying to yourself
  • The same photo, the same dog, the same pet phrase
  • Posting from the wrong account. Reddit's app lets you stay logged in to several accounts on one device, which is handy and makes this mistake very easy

And remember who you're hiding from. A throwaway hides you from other redditors, not from Reddit. Every site you use sees your IP address and device details, whatever email you gave it. Our post on whether temp mail can be traced goes through what a disposable address does and doesn't cover.

What can't a throwaway be used for?

Vote manipulation and ban evasion. Reddit's rules on disrupting communities cover using multiple accounts to push votes up or down, and using another account to get around a community ban or a sitewide one.

Reddit says ban evasion can lead to a sitewide suspension, and that it combines reports from moderators and users with its own internal signals to spot it. A new email address doesn't hide any of that. It's also not something we'd help with.

If a subreddit banned you, the honest route is to message its moderators. Reddit notes that some moderators are fine with someone returning on another account as long as they take part in good faith, so ask first. If they say no, find another community.

If the throwaway turns into a keeper

Add a lasting address before the temp inbox expires. On the web, it's in Account Settings under General, in the email address field. In the app, tap your avatar, open the menu, go to Settings, tap your username and look under Basic Settings. Reddit emails a link to verify the new address.

For an account you're keeping, the new address should still be separate from your main one. Otherwise you've rebuilt the link you were avoiding. An alias is the natural fit; our comparison of email alias services covers the popular ones. The full walkthrough, including what to try if the temp inbox has already expired, is in our guide to moving an account off temp mail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover a Reddit throwaway after the temp email expired?

Probably not, if you've also forgotten the password. Reddit says it can't help someone log in when it can't confirm they own the account, and that it won't be able to help if you've lost access to the account's email. Check your browser and phone for saved passwords first. If you do get back in, add a lasting email straight away.

Can I use one temp address for several Reddit throwaways?

Reddit allows it, but it defeats the purpose. Every account on that address would show up together in the password reset list, and when the inbox expires they all lose their reset path at the same moment. Give each throwaway its own address. On YelMail, pressing Change gives you a new random one in a second.

Does Reddit block temporary email addresses?

Reddit doesn't publish a list of blocked domains, and any site can refuse addresses it doesn't trust. If the code never arrives or the address is rejected, press Change and try a new one. Reddit's own help says domains outside the big providers are allowed; a well-known domain is just one of several good-faith signals it looks at.

Will Reddit keep emailing my throwaway address?

Yes. Reddit sends notifications and digests to whatever address is on the account, and after the temp inbox expires, those messages go nowhere. That's harmless, and it means nothing about the throwaway lands in your real inbox. The main thing you lose is the ability to reset the password by email.

Before you post

Open a throwaway email, make the account and pick a username you've never used anywhere. Then keep the small identifying details out of your posts, since that's where most throwaways slip.
