Why does free temporary email expire after 2 hours?
Free temporary email expires after 2 hours on purpose. Short retention is what makes a free, no-account inbox sensible to hand out: there is nothing to sign in to, so the inbox has to clean up after itself.
The 2 hour window does several jobs at once:
- Less data sits around. Messages and attachments are deleted automatically, so an abandoned inbox does not keep collecting mail.
- Old addresses lose their value. An address that disappears soon is worth little to spammers and list sellers.
- It fits the main use. Most people need a free inbox for one code or one link, and 2 hours is plenty for that. For a quick one-off, the free 10 minute mail style inbox is all you need.
- The free plan stays simple. Short-lived mail keeps the ad-supported service easy to run for everyone.
The timer is forgiving. Each email is kept for 2 hours after it arrives, and the inbox only expires after 2 hours without activity, so it does not vanish while you are using it. But once a free inbox expires, the address and its messages cannot be recovered. When you need more time than that, Premium is the answer.
| Free | Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| Each email is kept | 2 hours | 30 days |
| Address stays active | Until 2 hours of inactivity | While you subscribe |
| Where your addresses live | In the browser that created them | In your account |
| Recover an expired address | No | Not needed while subscribed |
| Addresses at once | 1 | Up to 25 |
| Forward mail to your inbox | No | Yes |
| Attachment limit | 5 MB | 25 MB |
When do you need a temporary email that lasts?
You need a longer-lasting temporary email whenever the messages you care about arrive over days or weeks, not minutes. If the second or third email from a sender matters as much as the first, 2 hours is not enough.
Typical cases:
- Online orders. A confirmation today, shipping updates later in the week, a delivery notice after that.
- Free trials. A 14 or 30 day trial often sends its "your trial ends soon" reminder near the end.
- Travel and events. Booking confirmations come first, then tickets, check-in links and changes.
- Waitlists and betas. An invite can take weeks to arrive.
- Price alerts and restock notices. The email you actually want may come days after you sign up.
- Longer QA cycles. Test accounts that need to receive email across a whole release, not just a single run.
In each case you still do not want to hand over your personal email. A Premium address gives you the privacy of temp mail with enough time to see the whole exchange through, and you can delete any address the moment you are finished with it.
How do 30-day retention, saved addresses and forwarding work?
With Premium, every message is kept for 30 days after it arrives, and your addresses are saved to your account and reserved while your subscription is active. Here is how the pieces fit together.
30-day retention. Each email and its attachments, now up to 25 MB, stay available for 30 days. After that they are deleted automatically, just like on the free plan, only on a longer clock.
Saved addresses. You can hold up to 25 inboxes at once. Because they belong to your account instead of one browser, clearing your browser data or switching laptops does not lock you out. Sign in and they are all there.
Forwarding. Verify a personal address, and YelMail can forward incoming mail to it. You keep the temporary address on sign-up forms while the messages you care about show up where you already read email.
Custom names. Give long-lived addresses names you will recognize, which helps once you have more than a few. Our page on custom temp mail has naming ideas.
API access. Developers can create inboxes and read mail from scripts using personal API keys. See the temp mail API docs.
Is there a temp mail that doesn't expire?
Not on YelMail, and that is intentional. Even on Premium, each email is kept for 30 days and then deleted. What lasts is the address: it stays reserved for you while your subscription is active, so you can keep receiving new mail at it month after month.
A temporary inbox that never deleted anything would simply be a second permanent inbox, with the same clutter and the same long-term exposure if it ever leaked. The value of temp mail is that things go away.
If some messages need to be kept for good, such as receipts, contracts or account details, you have two good options:
- Forward them to your personal inbox as they arrive, using Premium forwarding.
- Use your real address for that one account, and keep temporary addresses for everything else.
For most people, 30 days of retention across up to 25 addresses comfortably covers trials, orders, bookings and test accounts. You can compare both plans in full on the pricing page.
